SAC-M Executive Director Ben Lee was honoured to join Kim Aris and over 500 people at a Burmese community event in Sydney and deliver some remarks.
Kim is leading a global campaign demanding the Myanmar junta produce Proof of Life for his mother, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, who remains in incommunicado arbitrary detention.
More than 22,000 political prisoners continue to languish in junta cells, many subjected to the most horrific crimes. Added to them are the murdered, disappeared and countless displaced across Myanmar.
In his remarks, Ben recognised the Myanmar people’s commitment to freedom and democracy and the appalling cost that it continues to demand of them. He urged the international community to stand behind the principles it so often promotes – democracy, justice and self-determination – by supporting the Myanmar people in their struggle and taking concrete action to bring an end to the junta’s violence.
