SAC-M was formed in response to the military's attempted coup in February 2021 to provide strategic advice to, and advocate for, the democratic movement in Myanmar, to ensure their demands are heard by key decision-makers at this critical time.

The Myanmar military has used its arsenal of sophisticated military-grade weapons against the Myanmar population for decades to systematically violate international law. A number of States, collectively and individually, have taken measures to prevent the sale of arms and dual-use equipment and technology to the Myanmar military.

The Myanmar military has generated vast wealth through a complex web of commercial interests which has enabled it to carry out gross human rights violations across the country for many years. A number of States have, individually or collectively, imposed sanctions on individuals and entities under the direct control of the military or that are otherwise financially contributing to the current junta.

Myanmar has a longstanding history of impunity for perpetrators of grave human rights violations against all people across the country. The Myanmar military in particular has always sought to shield itself from justice. The international community is taking steps to bring perpetrators of human rights violations committed against the people of Myanmar to justice.
